Vote by phone? No, no, no, and NO! Believe it or not, we don't all have the latest model with fingerprint and facial recognition, and I wouldn't carry one of those if you gave me one for free. I do no financial transactions on my phone, don't even text. Should I therefore be disenfranchised from voting? A friend had her super-smart phone stolen on the Paris Metro and it blew a hole right in the middle of her life. No thanks. Love you, Spencer, but gonna take a pass on this idea.

Holy shit this is the first time I've ever heard anyone else advocate for the voting system that I've been proposing for the last 10 years. Almost verbatim. Awesome.

For those freaking out about using phones, you could still do this same exact ledger system with paper ballots, so don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. The most important part is the public anonymous ledger. Because right now, whether you go to the polling station on election day, or especially if you mail a ballot in, you have ZERO proof your vote actually counted for anything except landfill fodder. None. Zero.

If we had a public ledger, they could release the voter numbers prior to the election, make sure yours is on there, get it fixed beforehand if not, and then after the election you could check that yours is still on there and showing the correct votes.

If you're worried about vote anonymity, you could re-issue voter numbers for every election . The Social Security office could do it (in theory) because only citizens have SS numbers, right?

...Right?

Or the IRS could do it. They already issue you a taxpayer ID you don't memorize. They could issue a voter number annually, too.

Like Spencer said, there's a hundred ways we could easily fix this problem, and the fact that we haven't yet tells you that our current electoral process is 100% fake and gay and your vote doesn't count for shit.
